The protein complex acts locally at neuromuscular junctions by selectively binding presynaptically to high-affinity acceptor sites on motor nerve terminals. Upon endocytotic internalization, the toxin's light chain cleaves SNAP-25, a crucial SNARE protein required for the docking and exocytosis of acetylcholine-containing vesicles. By inhibiting the presynaptic release of acetylcholine into the synaptic cleft, Botulax produces temporary chemical denervation of the target muscle, resulting in localized muscle relaxation and a reduction in hyperactive muscle contractions.
